Butterfly Gardeners Association
Dear Alan, Wow! What a wonderful package. Thank you for all your kindness - how I dream of a world of peace and justice. I wish you the best in all your efforts - if I can do something - let me know. When the center opens let me know - I'll send my books there for its library. I didn't know if you had them - so here are copies. I hope when our hospital reopens that you'll come and make sure we're doing our best for the butterflies. I put you on the mailing list for our newsletter. I take five clowns next week for a week in El Salvador orphanages - then home for the weekend and take a hundred folk to Cuba for a week. Enjoy everything. In peace, Patch 11-30-99 Bio: Patch Adams, a former mental health patient who decided to get his own M.D., and in the process, developed a new approach to medicine that went contrary to conventional procedures, but was successful and loved by patients nonetheless. Patch Adams' approach to medicine is to approach his "patients" as people, and talk to them with humor and humanity. To this day, Patch Adams' Gesundheit! Institute provides free medical care to people in West Virginia. People are fed up with the state of medical care in America, and that's what Patch Adams and his Gesundheit! Institute are all about. Healing is one of the most necessary and humane acts we are faced with tackling in our lives, and it is Patch's opinion that the medical system approaches people in a way that is not condusive to getting better. A World Forum sponsored conference titled Creating a Culture of Peace for the 21st Century on October 3, 1999, was well-attended by interested participants but generated little media interest until Adams and prominent activist Dr. Helen Caldicott called for the nude demonstration. Although many ideas were discussed at the forum, the main thrust of the meeting were the dangers of nuclear accidents that could occur on Jan. 1, 2000, if computer systems in countries around the world crashed on January 1, 2000. "Non-violent people like us really have so few tools to face a capitalist system," Adams told the crowd as they uncomfortably disrobed outside Herbst Theater in the War Memorial Building. "All we really have are ourselves and our ideas. Our ideas have not done the job." With those words, the crowd whooped and hollered their way out of the building and onto Van Ness for a quick stroll down the street, chanting, "Disrobe for disarmament," and, "News, not nukes." James Twyman Bio: Several years ago, James Twyman decided to apply his lifelong gift for music to his spiritual quest. Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, Jimmy took to the road singing of peace and happiness to whoever would listen. Shortly before leaving on a European tour, James was given a copy of the peace prayers from 12 major religions. He was inspired as he read them and the music started to flow. By the end of the day, James had written music for each of the 12 prayers and knew there was something special about them. While on tour in Europe , James was led by coincidence after coincidence and ended up in the war-torn countries of Bosnia and Croatia. While there coincidence led him to find a secret society called the Emissaries of Light, that had been anchoring peace in this dimension throughout time. He shared in their meditations and teachings, being told that he would be the one to take their teachings to the world. His adventures in Bosnia-Croatia were told in his book Emissary of Light Jimmy Twyman is still a Peace Troubadour, travel-ing around the globe, singing the peace prayers and giving workshops on the teachings of the Emissaries of Light. He shares their techniques for transmuting fear from the consciousness and anchoring peace within. For it is when we are peaceful within, that the world will reflect this peace outwardly. He has since traveled around the world, often risking his life, to sing Prayers of Peace. James was invited to Baghdad, and later, Belfast, Ireland to sing and pray for peace. Each time he called for the world to join him in focused intent; and each time thousands of you did. As you all know, both Iraq and Ireland agreed peace was the answer within days. James dedicates his life to helping us all become Emissaries of Light. At his workshops and concerts, he teaches practical ways we can all bring more peace into our lives and shares his music singing songs of peace to our hearts.
I think the butterfly project is a terrific idea ... the butterfly is like the proverbial canary in the coal mine, only smaller and more delicate ... The more butterflies, the healthier the planet and vice versa ... perhaps the Swami could write a little piece on butterflies and you can use it in your promo, etc. Anything else I can do, let me know. Armando Pérez Morales Bio: Armondo is a teacher and gives seminars and workshops in the fields of psychology, history, and mental health. He is a business consultant, psychologist, personnel development and corporate manager. He wants to help develope the business plan for the Butterfly Gardeners and Patch Adams Centers. Armondo spent over 15 years synthesizing five different sacred oracle/games
from the ancient cultures of China, India, Persia, Greece, and Meso-America
into one modern game. He combined elements of the I Ching, Leela, Asha,
Magic Squares, and Patoli, weaving a many-layered web of psychological,
symbolic, mythological and numerical ingredients. What emerged was the
archetypal game called Psyche that incorporates the symbol of the butterfly. These ingredients operate in Psyche via "synchronicity," a
term coined by Carl Jung to describe meaningful and seemingly merely coincidental
happenings. Jung stated that these happenings must be based on some principle
connecting our psyches with the phenomenal order of energy and matter.
In recent years, more and more people have come to see that a new spiritual vision of the significance of the individual, coupled with a consciousness of our global interconnectedness, is needed to rescue civilization from self-destruction. If we desire a global change, it will first be necessary to develop individual human potentials. We must explore and transform our own states of consciousness and project a new vision of reality, including the universal acceptance of ethnic and cultural differences. Modern society has lost contact with the mythological roots of its constituent peoples. These myths are the stories that give meaning to life. Most ancient cultures developed sacred games, systems of wisdom or guides of conduct based on their visions of the cosmos and religious beliefs. These games were not trivial pastimes. They were fundamental expressions of the perception that people had of the unseen forces which determine human experience and gave guidance for their proper attitudes and conduct in light of their circumstances. William Thomas Bio: On June 3, 1981, William Thomas sat down on the White House sidewalk with a small cardboard sign, "WANTED: WISDOM & HONESTY," and a flier. He was quickly arrested, the first of many attempts to displace him. He kept coming back. Thomas' fast ended, but he remained to establish a full-time, unpaid
continuous forum in front of the White House. Thomas' message, "WANTED,
WISDOM & HONESTY," has stood north of the White House day and
night since 1981, except for a three-month period in 1988 when Thomas
was sent to prison by U.S. Judges Flannery and Richey, who wanted to "deter
others from adopting your lifestyle." He has patiently outlasted
most of the police, the media, and even the eager regulation writers,
who originally attempted to remove Thomas. Unlike 1981, it appears for
now that the White House accepts the presence of the vigil. However, that
is subject to change at any moment. The award-winning Proposition One website is an archive of news and activities. Believing in the principle that it is better to teach a man to fish (or think) than to feed him, Thomas uses every medium available to help come to common understanding with people. Two documentaries, "The Ground War At Home" in 1991 (about the Gulf War) and "Proposition One: Peace Through Reason" in 1994 (updated in 1999, about HR-2545), have been broadcast on public access television in Washington, DC and elsewhere, and are available for activists who email, write, or call. Note; This bio contains many hotlinks that are now shown. Please visit http://prop1.org/thomas.htm to see them all. No matter who I'm addressing, I bring them this vision and wonder with them how they're going to be involved. I regard myself as a hawker at a circus, telling people to come one, come all. This isn't my party. It's everybody's party and I'm just spreading the word." From http://www.worldcelebration.com/About_Cloud/about_cloud.html
