Banning Space Based Weapons
On January 24, 2002, the board of Musicians for Peace endorsed the initiative
to ban Space Based Weapons after being asked by the Institute for Cooperation
in Space (ICIS) to extend our proposed concert for a US Department of Peace
to endorse the Space Preservation Act and Space Preservation Treaty. It would
ban space-based weapons in all 190 Nations and is also sponsored by Dennis On January 4, 2003, the director of ICIS Vancouver, Alfred Webre, had this
to say. "We totally embrace and support Musicians & Fine Artists
for World Peace and your concert to raise awareness of the Department
of Peace Act. As you know, Dennis recently spoke here in Canada at the
CUSP Conference in Toronto. His "Sacred Mission" speech endorsed
the Space preservation Treaty Conference, banning all space weapons. Please read the important information that follows. Help stop the
miltary-industrial complex and our misguided leaders from weaponizing
space.
Date: 02/25/2003 Alan - Please distribute this message far and wide. Far and wide as in Planet Earth. We can cocreate the Space Preservation Treaty Conference, when concerned people from all over the Planet write the Canadian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Thank you, Alfred Webre, Institute for Cooperation in Space (ICIS)
There is great news about the "No Weapons In Space Campaign"! On Feb 17 Svend Robinson introduced in Canadian Parliament our petition to stop the weaponization of space. In a few days we will put together an online petition to go to the Prime Minister and Members of Parliament. As we are being dragged headlong in to this war against Iraq---and much
of our energy is spent in opposing this war, we should keep in mind that
since the abrogation of the ABM Treaty preparations are being made for
what is called the Missile Defense System---but is in reality a move by
the US to weaponize and exploit space unilaterally, as can clearly be
seen from the USSPACECOM's "Vision for 2020". For a good background on the issue read this article: In this climate of war and fear we are being told that this is necessary for our safety, but commonsense should tell us that there is no safety in creating not only endless war on the planet-- but now engendering an arms race in space. This madness must stop! Please send support to Svend Robinson, Burnaby/Douglas MP for introducing this crucial issue in Parliament, as well as raise your concerns with Foreign Minister Bill Graham, and Prime Minister Jean Chretien. I respectfully suggest that Prime Minister Jean Chretien could leave no greater legacy to the people of Canada and the children of this world than to turn this insanity around and set us on a path of peaceful coexistence. I would ask that we as humanity use our sense of logic and realize that more and bigger weapons lead to more and bigger destruction, not safety. And in the end what? Using commonsense can tell us the answer to that. Is this what we want to leave for our children? Canada is respected around the world as a peace-loving nation. For the sake of not only our country but the rest of the world I would ask that we prove this, and speak out against the weaponization of space as well as oppose war as an answer to the predicament humanity now finds itself in. The alternative is unthinkable. You can use any part of this letter or write your own. Peace Please send e-mails to: Honourable Svend Robinson, Burnaby-Douglas MP at Robinson.S@parl.gc.ca
Mr. Svend Robinson (Burnaby Douglas, NDP): The first petition is on the subject of the weaponization of outer space. It is signed by over 1,200 petitioners from the lower mainland of British
Columbia, including Bea Bernhausen of Vancouver, Alfred Webre of the
Institute for Cooperation in Space Canada and many of my own constituents of
Burnaby Douglas. The petitioners raise serious concerns about the possibility
of an arms race in space, particularly as a result of the American They therefore urge the House of Commons to call upon the government to immediately approve, sign and ratify the space preservation treaty and deposit the treaty with the secretary general of the United Nations, as well as to convene a treaty signing conference for the space preservation treaty as Canada has done on other occasions, for example, with the land mines treaty.
